California’s ‘Ban’ on Motorhomes: What You Need to Know

Despite trade groups’ best efforts, new regulations taking effect in 2025 will effectively prevent RV dealers from selling diesel coaches — and not just in California.
California’s Advanced Clean Trucks (ACT) regulation doesn’t explicitly ban the sale of motorized RVs. But as the directors of the RV Industry Association (RVIA) explain in a post at RV Business, it does require medium- and heavy-duty vehicle manufacturers to make zero-emission vehicles a steadily increasing share of their fleets.
“This has led chassis manufacturers to halt sales of traditional internal combustion engine chassis for motorhomes in California, stemming from the lack of ZEV chassis suitable for motorhomes,” they write.
RVIA and other trade groups tried to exclude RV chasses from the new rules. But they failed to sway regulators in California and 17 other states that have signed on to the California Air Resource Board (CARB) regulations.
