NY Dealers Push Back Against 2035 Zero Emissions Goal

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul’s goal of a zero-emissions new vehicle market by 2035 is “an unrealistic bust,” dealers from around the state tell Carl Campanile of the New York Post, citing plateauing EV sales and the imminent loss of federal tax credits for EV buyers.
Dealers are asking the governor to relax deadlines set by the Advance Clean Cars II mandate, which currently requires that “emissions free” vehicles account for an incrementally larger portion of the state’s new vehicle sales, starting with a 35% share in 2026. The most generous cited estimate, from New York’s Department of Environmental Conversation, put the 2024 tally at just over 10%.
“The deadlines don’t match the reality,” Jack Weidinger, chairman of the Greater New York Automobile Dealers Association and a Long Island Cadillac dealer. “Dealers want to extend the deadline so we don’t destroy the market.”
