In Reversal, Trump Orders AI Oversight

Jun. 2, 2026 | |

President Donald Trump has signed an executive order establishing federal regulatory oversight of advanced AI, establishing a 30-day government review period for “frontier” models.

The order represents a reversal of statements indicating the administration would take a hands-off approach to AI. Word of a White House-authored policy began to spread last month, culminating in the last-minute cancellation of an earlier version of the order.

Trump calls for cooperation among various U.S. agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security and the Treasury Department, to provide guidelines and a definition for covered frontier models, which would be subject to testing before they can be released to the public.

“Advanced AI capabilities make our Nation stronger, but also introduce new national security considerations that require coordinated action across executive departments and agencies … and components,” Trump writes. “As these capabilities evolve, my Administration will continue to work closely with industry to ensure that the best and most secure technology is deployed rapidly to confront any and all threats to our country.”
