New Lawsuit Claims GM Recall Can’t Fix L87 Engine Issue

Jun. 30, 2025 | |

A recall affecting nearly 600,000 Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac trucks and SUVs equipped with General Motors’ 6.2-liter V8 L87 engine will not resolve an issue that could cause sudden loss of propulsion, according to a new class action lawsuit.

CarComplaints.com’s David A. Wood reports the suit was filed in the U.S. District Court’s Eastern District of Michigan by Brian Markus, the owner of a 2024 GMC Sierra 1500. Markus claims the vehicle suffered a total engine loss at 14,000 miles after at least one visit to the service department at Laura Chevrolet Buick GMC of Sullivan (Mo.).

“The plaintiff complains he was driving his truck in November 2024 when a warning light indicated the truck was low on oil,” Wood writes. “The plaintiff says he was confused because he always makes sure the oil level isn’t low. Yet he checked the engine oil dipstick and found the engine had no oil. He added oil and took the truck to a GM dealer the next day where he was told oil was entering the combustion chamber.”

The new lawsuit is unrelated to a May filing in the same venue that claims GM was aware of the underlying issue several years prior to the recall announcement. That suit failed to earn class action status when the judge determined the number of affected models precludes the certification of a single class.
