Dealers to Honda: Stop Selling Afeela EVs to Californians

May. 20, 2025 | |

The California New Car Dealers Association has officially demanded that Honda Motor Co. and its Sony Honda Mobility division stop marketing to and collecting deposits for the Afeela 1 EV from California residents.

In a cease-and-desist letter and accompanying press release, CNCDA and its president, Brian Maas, say state law requires the factory to sell and lease the vehicles it produces through its network of franchised dealers.

“California law is crystal clear. Automakers and their affiliates are not allowed to compete with their own franchised dealers through direct sales,” Maas writes. “Sony Honda’s rollout of selling Afeela vehicles directly to consumers is an unlawful effort to circumvent the state’s protections for franchisees, and we are fully prepared to take legal action to defend our Honda and Acura dealer members.”

Last month, CNCDA sued Volkswagen AG to prevent direct sales of its Scout Motors EVs.
