Former Holzhauer Owner Out on Bail, Will Face Theft Charges

Jan. 7, 2026 | |

Daniel Winchell, the former owner of three Ford and General Motors dealerships in Northwest Iowa, secured a reduced bond of $25,000 and was released from Cherokee County Jail several weeks after his Dec. 8 arrest on four counts of theft and two counts of ongoing criminal conduct, according to the Cherokee Chronicle Times.

Winchell owned Holzhauer Motors, a Chevrolet and GMC store in Cherokee, Iowa, as well as Ford dealerships in Cherokee and nearby Storm Lake.

Winchell stands accused of selling at least 80 vehicles out of trust prior to the dealerships’ closure in 2024. State prosecutors say some Holzhauer customers were forced to pay tax, title and registration fees twice.

Sources say a trial date may be set following pre-trial proceedings this month.
