May Inventory Report Shows Higher Carryover, Days’ Supply

Lotlinx’s latest Vincensus report shows new vehicles in stock at U.S. dealerships carried over at a rate of 51% in May, a 3% increase over the same month a year ago, and days’ supply improved by five days to 64.
Used units carried over at a rate of 44%, unchanged from May 2024, while days’ supply decreased by one day to 40.
Analysts note supplies were highest for battery electric vehicles (102 days) and lowest for hybrids (52), dovetailing with a recent U.S. Energy Information Administration report charting sluggish sales for BEVs and plug-ins as hybrid sales accelerate.
“May served as a pivotal transition month for the U.S. automotive market. While overall sales experienced a year-over-year increase, the pace decelerated significantly as the previous surge in demand, fueled by tariff uncertainties, began to cool. Despite a slight rebound in consumer sentiment, affordability concerns persist, underscored by elevated interest rates and rising average transaction prices,” Lotlinx’s report states, in part.
