Odometer Fraud Up 14% as California Leads Nation in Rollbacks

Dec. 22, 2025 | |

Carfax’s latest report estimates more than 2.45 million U.S.-registered vehicles have rolled-back odometers, an increase of 14% from 2024, led by California’s estimated 532,200 units.

Other high-rollback states include Texas (333,900) and Florida (109,000). Montana (up 33%) leads the nation in year-over-year increases, followed by Tennessee (30%) and Arkansas (28%).

Carfax analyst Patrick Olsen says digital odometers have made it easier for unscrupulous dealers and individuals to delete miles, often in the tens of thousands.

“Even a slight adjustment of a few thousand miles will affect a vehicle’s value. However, most odometer tampering incidents involve tens of thousands of miles,” Olsen writes. “That means the 7-year-old sedan showing 40,000 miles on the odometer might have 90,000 miles or more.”
