An aggressive acquisition strategy helped Penske Automotive Group move ahead of former No. 2 AutoNation in Automotive News’s rankings of America’s biggest new car retailers.

Lithia Motors remains No. 1 on AN’s list, which is based on the prior year’s retail sales.

The nation’s top 150 dealerships accounted for 27% of all retail and fleet sales in 2025, up from 26.7% a year earlier, writes AN’s Paige Hodder.

“The top 150 dealership groups, however, saw their share of overall dealerships fall,” Hodder notes. “At the end of 2025, they owned 4,806 stores, or 26.3 percent of the country’s 18,300 dealerships. At the end of 2024, they owned 4,866 stores, or 26.6 percent of the nation’s 18,311 franchised dealerships.”

In November, Penske announced the purchase of Southern California’s Longo Toyota, the factory’s highest-volume U.S. store.
