Mind the GAP: Total Losses on the Rise

The frequency of damage claims resulting in a total loss is poised to grow by a full percentage point by year’s end, according to CCC Intelligent Solutions, a trend that will put further pressure on GAP insurance and waiver underwriters.
The claims and collision repair data source’s year-end “Crash Course” report projects the frequency of total losses will grow from a record 22.1% a year ago to 23.1% in 2025. Factors at play include an aging fleet and the advancement of in-vehicle technology.
“Under the hood, vehicles became more complex,” analysts write. “More embedded electronics, a broader presence of ADAS, and increasingly integrated components led to more diagnostics, more calibrations and costlier repair procedures. What entered the body shop in 2025 was fundamentally different from what shops saw even a few years prior.”
