South Carolina Grants Scout Motors $1.3B, Blocks Sales

Manufacturers are not allowed to sell vehicles directly to consumers in South Carolina, the same state that granted EV maker Scout Motors (div. Volkswagen Group) $1.3 billion in incentives to build its Terra truck and Traveler SUV in a factory outside the state capital of Columbia.

That could change if the South Carolina Consumer Freedom Act, a bill proposed by State Rep. Mark Smith, moves forward. If not, residents of the state where Scouts are built will have to travel to Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia or Florida to buy one, writes Joseph Bustos in a special report for The State.

“The last time a lawmaker proposed allowing electric vehicle makers to directly sell to consumers was in 2019, when then-state Sen. Sandy Senn, R-Charleston proposed the idea. Her legislation never moved out of committee,” Bustos notes.
